Tripod Question

#1

Post by Refractordude »

I am just curious. What tripod is this heavy 152mm f8 telescope mounted on. Did not think this was possible with available tripods. By the way, what az mount would you use with such a large telescope?

The tripod and head are Manfrotto, the tripod style is similar to my 028b possibly a 058b.
The head may be a 504 model
Some nice refractors, eyepieces, mounts and related equipment

Not sure what that tripod is either, but that's scary looking! A 6" on that spindly thing... I don't even see an eyepiece tray, which would connect the legs together.

Something like this would probably work better: https://www.altairastro.com/altair-sabr ... -v2.0.html

All the best,
Mark

My Manfrotto 028b can carry a 11.5kg load stability.
Do not let the spindly legs fool you :)

Do you use it for your 152mm f8?

No the mount is not rated for the weight of my 150mm (13.6kg)
If the refractor was stock configuration it would do reasonably well with one.
The length may cause a bit of vibration, I have used it with my 100 f/10 and 102 f/11 as they are about the same length as the 150mm but half of the weight.

The telescope minus the Losmandy plate is about the same weight as the Synta 150mm f/8 so with careful balance I could use it with my Manfrotto setup though settling times may be high at times.

It does "appear" scary.

At a club meet one night, the forum club president and her daughter had an ED152 f/8 mounted on a Twilight I mount. It was all I could do to keep from cringing while looking at it. I had to fight the urge to place my hands under the OTA.

All the best,
Exactly! T-shaped dual capacity mount (ES Twilight 2, SW SkyTee 2, etc.) would be the best if are talking about AltAz. Even if you don't mount second scope, you can use counterbalance on the other side.
