Spain 2026 location suggestions.

Post by tavis »

Somewhat new umbraphile here ( 2017 and 2024 ). We are planning on being on a cruise for the 2026 eclipse and are trying to figure out the best side of Spain to be on for weather purposes. Since the eclipse will be very low in the sky and end at the horizon this is a bit of special circumstances weather-wise. Cloud cover at the horizon at sunset might be better over water or over land which would dictate being on the west or east coast of Spain. Does anybody have experience with eclipses near the horizon ? Thanks.

A cruise to the East of Spain in the Mediterranean around the Balearic Islands would be better weather with a shorter eclipse and higher light pollution. The path of Totality curves round into Spain from her North coast. So a cruise on that side would be in the Bay of Biscay, famous for its storms and tempests! The eclipse duration would be a bit longer though.

I'm thinking of flying into Madrid and travelling North to a dark area between Madrid and Zaragoza. It's that or a 92% partial from my back garden!
