Arp 289 (
NGC 3981, PGC 37496, ESO 572-20, VV 8 and others) – part of Arp’s “Double Galaxies – Wind Effects” class – is a large, unbared spiral galaxy located approximately 49 million light-years away in Crater. While there being two galaxies appears to be a mistake the bright knot at the bottom of Arp 289 is designated as VV 8b.
Luminance – 48x600s – 480 minutes – binned 1x1
RGB – 11:10:12x300s – 55:50:60 minutes each – binned 2x2
645 minutes total exposure – 10 hours 45 minutes
Imaged over nine nights in April, 2017, April, 2021, January, 2022 and February, 2024 from Dark Sky New Mexico at Rancho Hidalgo (Animas, New Mexico) with a SBIG STF-8300M on an Astro-Tech AT12RCT at
f/8 2432mm.
