Weird event while attempting photo.

Post by Jnicholes »

I have no idea how to explain what happened in this video that I took. Can someone help me figure out what exactly happened? It happened while I was trying to photograph the inferior conjunction of Venus

Since it is prior to full darkness, I wonder if perchance it could be insects (out of focus) passing through the view given the number of them, and the various angles of passage through the field? That was my first impression in looking at the video.

I agree with Alan but more information may help. Forward scattered sunlight off of out-of-focus insects is a likely answer.

Was the camera fixed or was it being held by hand? If by hand, maybe lens reflections due to the proximity of the sun’s image.

Concerning the camera, it was mounted on my telescope by an adapter. I was not holding it in my hand.

The weird thing is that I did not notice any insects while I was doing astronomy. I could’ve been wrong, though.

The “insects” idea is just a guess but they could actually be some distance from your telescope and not readily noticed. It might be interesting to perform more experiments.
