Re: New scope
Astrotech is a specific brand manufactured for Astronomics who supply their own QA/QC, SvBony manufactures nothing and is only a re-seller.The Wave Catcher wrote: ↑Wed Feb 02, 2022 1:59 am Funny, I bought a Astro-Tech AT102ED today too! I think it is really an SvBONY SV503 102F7 ED rebranded. I almost bought the SvBONY instead until I saw the $98 shipping cost and Astronomics is only 163 miles away.

Re: New scope
Good chance they are made on the same factory and share parts, but the optics inside is different. AT has FK-61 ED glass and list weight of 9 lb, SvBONY SV503 102F7 ED has S-FPL51 glass and list weight of 12 lb.The Wave Catcher wrote: ↑Wed Feb 02, 2022 12:51 pm It is often hard to track down actual manufacturers of our gear but one thing for sure is that from the available photos and specifications, the Astro-Tech AT102ED and the SvBONY SV503 102F7 ED are identical telescopes other than their paint jobs. If they are both rebranded from another source, then I'm glad that I purchased from my local Astronomics. My Bresser (German brand) is nearly identical to Explore Scientific, both now made in China, likely the same factory. So far, I have no complaints about the quality of the products. My favorite eyepieces that I own are Astro-Tech so I'll likely be pleased with their telescope.

Re: New scope
AstroTech is made for Astronomics by Kunming United Optics and Astronomics have always openly discussed reasons for decisions to keep costs affordable.
APM also uses KUO for some of their product. (Possibly the Lunt 102mm)
Glass quality, coatings quality, build quality are what the more expensive QA/ QC is all about.
**Personal speculation coming up**
SvBony used to sell the 503 for $400.00 USD but now it is listed for $570.00 USD. I still think at this price, which I think is just priced to market is rejected/ factory seconds.
I imagine they will still work decently, but if compared to a more premium refractor of the same specifications the difference will be noticeable.
Email SvBony and ask what the target Strehl number is or what the lens cell is made of.
They supply nothing of consequence for information on their product.

Re: New scope
I believe you are looking at the wrong price Gabby. SVBONY SV503 sells 70mm, 80mm and 102mm under the same model name. 70mm is $409, 80mm is $570 and 102mm is $699, while AT 102mm is $649 and 80mm is $429. So price alone could be misleading.Lady Fraktor wrote: ↑Wed Feb 02, 2022 9:25 pm Too many people mistake insignificant specifications between models as confirmation of build.

I see logic in your reasoning, but it is hard for me to believe that the whole product line is based on rejects.

There also available on Amazon.. that's where I was looking at them. The Wave Catcher wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 1:09 am SvBONY has a local warehouse in the US so shipping times are less than a week. They still recoup the overseas shipping costs during the sale. It was going to be $98 US for delivery to Texas. They just ask that you contact them before ordering to make sure the product is still in stock at the warehouse.

Re: New scope
The manufacturer has to re-coup their production losses somehow so they sell the equipment rejected by other vendors.
I am not saying the product is garbage, just that it will not be 100% when compared to other product.
