I saw this video posted on Twitter today and it shows exactly how much damage can be done.
Not for the squeamish, he uses a pigs eye for the demonstration.

That was gross!
Looking at the sun through a telescope focused for 40 seconds would be about like sticking your head in a blast furnace!
I can almost imagine someone looking at the sun for one second though and that would surely cause irreparable damage.
No wonder that mounts disable viewing the sun by default without an override!
