Thanks for the data Gordon!
I ran this through StarTools and I also found using the "Uncalib-1" preset in the wipe module seemed to work well...
I have been finding this to be true for my less than perfect data (ie: full moon or other weirdness going on)...
I also tried to bring out the eyes of the owl without completely losing the red in the outer shell...

Thats really excellent Larry, you have so much structure in the centre and also the outer area is showing so much red. Good Job!

I'm really impressed with the quality of the processing I'm seeing. I enjoy seeing the different 'look' that each of you are sharing!!!

Here's a better attempt than my last one! I used Colour Balance rather than colour selective curves stretch to get the colours right.

Challenge No 17-Gordon-M97 Owl-01.jpg

The background needs darkening but I lose the nebula so a mask would be in order. Also the .jpg looks a lot worse on this laptop than it did when I processed it!

Gimp is a little tough to master @Graeme1858 . You've got a good start!

You know, @Graeme1858, the large view has too much noise, but the preview looks quite nice, especially with the ambience created by the yellow mist above the owl.

I tried GIMP myself on earlier challenges. GIMP is powerful but also unforgiving for mistakes and I make lots of those.

I think GIMP may soon be fitted out with adjustment layers. These will make a big difference, and the tools in G'MIC are awesome for suppressing noise and bringing out detail.

For my first attempt on this one I tried darktable (after making a 16 bit Tiff in Fitswork). I clearly need more experience with darktable. Soon, I hope, I'll come up with something presentable prepared entirely with freeware.

Yes I tried GIMP for a while and just could not get on with it.

This is a darktable screenshot. The modules I used are the ones on the right hand side.
Fitswork+Darktable.png
When I opened the tiff (prepared with fitswork), darktable automatically did 11 steps of processing. I turned off the last few and then experimented. That's why the history looks a bit messy beyond step 9.

Now I finally have a fully freeware contribution to the challenge! I'm happy, though I realise that in better hands, darktable should be able to do much better. But that is for later.

Very nice job. All for free! Pretty cool. I've never even heard of darktable. In fact, fitswork is new to me also. I followed the Gimp --> Photoshop --> Pixinsight path. Many different paths to take in AP.

Cheers,
Steve

Indeed!

And David has now posted AP Processing Challenge No. 18 so we can all have another go!
