New Image: WR 134, PNG 073.4+01.5a and an Interesting Widefield

Post by jthommes »

The featured attraction in this image is WR 134 (PNG 073.4+01.5a). WR 134 is a Wolf-Rayet star surrounded by the Circumstellar Material of emission gas called PNG 073.4+01.5a. The These objects are about 6,200 light years distant. PNG 073.4+01.5a is established in the HASH PN Database as 'circumstellar material' and not a true planetary nebula.

The surrounding full field is pretty interesting. It is at the very southern edge of the Cygnus-X region studied by Dickel, Wendker, and Bieritz called the DWB HII catalog. The DWB catalog has 193 HII objects listed - eight are in the upper portion of this image. Also within this field are LBN 177, 179, 182, 187, and 189; as are LDN 856, 853 (also known as BARN 147). Open star clusters NGC 6871 and NGC 6883 are in this field as well as the small true planetary nebula NGC 6881.

This image is an HOO with RGB stars composition. The Ha and OIII stacks were 2x Drizzled; RGB stacks were a straight 1x integration.

The image below is a crop of WR 134 and its circumstellar material - it links to the main page with full FOV image and additional information. There is also a link below to the full FOV and annotated image. The full resolution image has a vertical FOV of 2.53 degrees and an image scale of about 0.95 "/pixel.

Great result Jim, I have tried this a few times from Bortle 8, and found it to be quite difficult.

Thanks for all of your kind words folks!

It was a lot of fun doing this image. When first acquiring with a relatively short focal length, I thought I would end up cropping down to just WR 134 and its circumstellar matter. Turns out the whole field is fairly attractive and doesn't seem to diminish WR 134 and its immediate surrounds.

Thanks Steve! (Thanks for your presentation help as well).

Turns out this was a standard 'North up' orientation of the full field from the camera. I really like the Framing wizard in NINA for planning out the target composition (SGP has a similar function). So that helped a lot to get a good composition out the the acquisition frame. Of course the downloaded image from DSS2 in the wizard doesn't show much of the dim nebulosity of the field, but you can sure get an idea of what's there and how to arrange a good composition.

Thanks Carole!

It was still a challenging acquisition from Bortle 3.5. I imagine the only way to get it from Bortle 8 would be strictly NB - probably with 3 nm filters ( RGB stars excepted). From my skies, my 6 nm NB filters were sufficient. It's the OIII that is really a challenge - it takes a lot of exposure.
