TSS Photo of the Day

Eclipse from Texas hill country

#1

Post by MrShorty »

Took my XT6 down to Texas for the eclipse. The days before the eclipse were a mess of nerves and weather reports trying to decide if we had a reasonable chance to see the eclipse or if the clouds would cause us to miss it, whether driving a couple of hours one direction or another would give us a better chance, and so on.

Monday morning, we decided that we had as good a chance as any if we just stayed put where we were (it would take several hours to get somewhere with a better chance). About noon, we went outside and the sun was out through high, thin clouds. We set up our observation with the telescope and our eclipse glasses and watched the eclipse progress between occasional thick clouds. About 15 minutes before totality, a rather thick bank of clouds moved in, and we were very concerned that we would miss totality. About 2 minutes before totality, we got lucky and that bank of clouds cleared out, allowing us to see totality and most of the rest of the eclipse.

An enjoyable experience. It didn't get as dark as expected (how much might the high clouds scatter light so that it didn't get as dark?), but we could see Venus and Jupiter.

Captured this shot through my XT 6.
