2023 Wrap up report

#1

Post by Mike Q »

Well since tonight is a washout and there will be no more opportunities to get out this year I guess I will present my first end of the year report. I wish i had lots of good things to say about this years astro season but work, weather and smoke gave me a grand total of 9 nights out this year. The highlight of the year was my first viewing of the Horsehead Nebula. I truly hope the rest of you had a much better season then i did and i am really hoping that we all have clear skies in 2024. Happy New Year everyone.

Mike,

I’m sorry to read that you didn’t get to have many sessions this year. I hope next year is much better for you. The burning world is bad for all of us.

Alas I also managed just a handful of sessions in 2023, weather for the most part was not cooperative. The late January comet in Ursa Minor was perhaps the highlight. Hope you have an improved 2024 Mike.

Yeah, this year wasn't the best. In my case it was health issues and smoke. I did manage to get in 3 outings at home and 13 at our dark site property. But the smoke made it challenging at times. Hopefully this year will be less smokey or smoke free!

Wow. You did get to view the Horsehead Nebula. That must have been very nice!

Yeah that was purely by accident and on a whim. We had just the right conditions that i was able to catch a bit of it. I am hoping to turn the 16 inch loose on Orion sometime this month, but Ohio is a cloudy State this time of year and even if i get a clear night I just dont handle the cold like i used to.

Ohio clouds over in November and with the exception of a few nights will remain fairly cloudy until May. Here summer is our best time of year. I have my best nights believe it or not in August. Its starts out hot and humid but about an hour or so after full darkness hits the humidity will break and the skies open up. The best night we had came the night after we had thunderstorms and three small tornadoes. If anyone had told me that was going to be a good night i would have laughed at them. It was the best night i have had in two years. Go figure.
