This was a problem with the so-called Bussard ramjet, a design that would scoop up free flowing hydrogen atoms via a magnetic field and funnel them to the ram drive. Supposedly with this design speeds of up to 40% of c could be achieved.
Somehow warping space would need to be figured out. I surmise that studying black holes and their ripples in spacetime might offer some clues, but our physics is far too immature at this point to come up with something promising.
