AVX broken plastic/12V outlet

#1

Post by planecrazzzy »

.
I don't know how... The Tri-pod and Mount were put aside with a plastic dust cover...
The 12V was left connected , just wrapped the cord for moving it.
As I'm messing with it... Got the 6" AP Newtonian mounted...
Hmmm, Noticed the plastic cover where the 12V plugs in was broke , the connector was sorta hanging.
(not like the picture, just a funny angle)
.
No matter how it got smacked , bumped or ?
The plastic is very thin at that area...
I'm sure others have and WILL break there.
My repair would work better as PREVENTIVE mod , rather than a repair.
.
I'm sure a new cover could be bought with enough searching.
I just searched the washer drawer.
.
I fixed it with two washers... skinny one was needed on the inside , a wider one worked better on the outside.
Both had to be "THIN" because threads are needed for the Elec connection "Depth"
When the plastic broke , it mostly made the original hole , slightly bigger.
The washers "Bridged" this gap.

Be careful with equipment that has heavy parts. Always loosen the clutches of a mount before moving or transporting it to prevent damaging the worm gears. Always take all connectors out; it is so easy for them to cause a lot of damage when it gets stuck somewhere. The connector on my AVX feels pretty solid so something must have yanked the connector pretty bad and you didn't even notice.

Cool fix!

When I had an AVX, I emailed Celestron Support several times and always got good service.

I broke one of the plastic gear housings. I don't remember if it was the RA or DEC (probably the DEC). They sent me one free of charge. You might just want to shoot them an email to see how they respond. They just might send you a new housing for free. Then you could be "whole" again!

That's a good idea , even if they charge for it , it shouldn't be too much.
.
From the pieces that I cleaned up , they were very thin.
I don't know if I got a bad mold or if it's the way they are.
If I get a new cover and it's thin , I'll put the washers in as preventative measures...
.
Maybe I put pressure on the connection while moving the tri-pod with the mount on it ?
I'm not RUFF with this stuff...So I'm still puzzled.
.
Thanks for the reply , I've been spying on you since someone mentioned you have the Telescope I just bought.
Looking at cameras...and stuff to get started at a level that I have to reach for.

Cool!

Very nice scope. If fact, I’m thinking about using it this week to image a target that needs a tighter fov than my Sharpstar.

I'm new here , please let me know where that will be when you post it.
Most of the time they give details of the equipment used...
and I'm still looking for the hardware,Camera, camera and that Orion tracker...
Seeing equipment and their results helps.
I have a Rebel T3 1100D whatever that is , I'm skipping that since I know nothing about it.
and jumping right into some sort of Mono camera with semi high MP
Still looking for a "System" that will flow. Camera,Telescope, Mount, and Computer.
Camera looks like ONE word... But many part$, and many money...many.
.
I'll get to the software later ( I have programs that are saved )
I've got a laptop that will be dedicated to AP
.
This set-up is dedicated to someone I knew... Chad
He was going to be able to work on some of this from his Bed or Computer.
But we weren't even CLOSE when he passed away.
But I'm gonna finish it , I know he's helping.
He was no Angel ( Well, maybe now ) so sometimes I think he just messes with me.
Harmless fun to him I'm sure.
.
He's been gone since 2019 , So it looks like I've been a little slow about it.
But meanwhile I've been learning the sky , seasons...Planets... I glance at the moon
But someday I want to take some pictures there too...
It's more than picture if you use the artistic eye to get that Pop.
.
Sorry... Babbling , I'll stop now
.
Gotta Fly...
.
PS Hmmm , I think Chad might have broke it... Just mess'n with me.
.
I was up ALL night , then it dawned on me...
