It's a burst not a chirp from a merger so "It's time for something completely different."

Well, it still was last night about 2100 CST anyway.

It appears that this kind of event would be a false detection at a rate of 1 in 25 years of operation.

Thanks notFritz. With regard to Betelgeuse non-astronomically minded friends who know I am an astro-nut are starting to ask me questions about this because of the mainstream media coverage. I tell them to just keep looking up and watch for an orange-red flash that will knock their socks off.

I think they're more likely to wait so long that disappointment will set in.

A dark SN (direct stellar collapse to black hole, but there should be neutrinos) a gamma ray burst directed away from us or a simple apparatus glitch.
