Another fun use of the mount is as a support for the 15x70's. I purchased the Celestron tripod adapter for binos last week, as a result it can be used in a steady and vibration free manner.

The only problem is the short height of the tripod compared to a standing observer, so I bought a 12" to 25 ...

Sounds helpful. I took the path to the top of Mt. Whitney in 2010 (14,495') and had no problems so presuming one is in decent shape it's probably OK.

Good start to your astronomical hobby. I agree with many of the above that one or two eyepieces would be useful to add to your collection - not Kellners. Plossls or Erfles can fit the bill in faster than f/6 scopes, plus some of the newer hybrid models...look at useful websites such as HighPoint ...
